New Year’s On, Old Fear’s Gone: How to Finally Stop Fear From Holding You Back

Image result for fear new yearCan anyone else relate when I say I feel like I blinked and 2016 is over? It’s as if time’s been speeding up and while this year has provided me some of the most expanding life lessons ever, even my darkest night seemed to be quickly brought into the light of a new day. And BAM! it’s December 31st.

If you’re anything like me, you had a shit ton of goals set out for yourself at the beginning of the year, and if you’re anything more like me you most likely still have a shit ton of those goals not yet crossed off your list. While I consider myself a hopeful, ambitious, creative person, I tend to get in my own way a lot and have this funny little habit of letting my fear of living in my full greatness keep me from embodying my true potential and authenticity.

As you can imagine and even know if you have or currently are experiencing this as well, it genuinely sucks to know what you want to do with your life and to know you have amazing resources afforded to you as well to help get you to the top of your proverbial mountain, but continually be the reason that you get about 3/4 of the way and always turn around.

Anyone else do this? I tend to start 5 different projects, unable to give them each the attention they deserve and so none of them get completed or if they do, it’s with an effort and a result that I know is not my best had I just picked one, gave it my full attention, completed it and moved onto the next. And while I have the awareness and know that I do this form of self-sabotage, I continue to do it…but why?

One. Simple. Word. And it causes so many people so much pain; FEAR. Fear can lock us in a place of actual stagnation in our lives that it can be years that go until we realize that we are neck deep in dreams we never worked towards and now let’s throw on some guilt and a sprinkle of self-loathing and resentment and now we have completed another circle of negativity that fear can cause in our lives and in our self-confidence.

What I’m learning the more life coaching I receive and the more that I provide to others as well, is that fear only has as much power over us as we allow it to. And all fears are dispelled in the same exact way, no matter what they are about and no matter how large or how small. All fears, dissipate when we face them. And that’s not to say that it actually goes away entirely, but when we face the fear it’s POWER over us ceases to exist and therefore the control it had over our lives is no longer.

See, we have two motivational forces in life for anything we do. It either comes from a place of fear or a place of love. We know where we’re coming from by how it makes us feel. If it feels good, you are most likely coming from love and if it doesn’t, then you are most likely coming from fear. But this isn’t to say that fear is always a bad thing.

Like I said, it can be a direct signal to know where a significant growth opportunity awaits you. And if you choose to be brave enough to step forth and face that fear, you often find that feeling of panic and overwhelm is melted away into relief and security that you can trust yourself. And the more you do it, the more you WILL trust yourself.

And this trust is vital for living a positive life and actually getting those goals crossed off your New Year’s Resolution list for good this year. So, try starting with small steps. So many of us throw huge expectations onto ourselves or too many changes at once where we are just setting ourselves up to fail. So, try either 1 big change or perhaps only 2-3 small ones to start out with. Be kind and patient with yourself and reward yourself for reaching milestones. Celebrate your successes; every one of them, no matter how small!

And the more you keep showing up for YOU, the more you will trust yourself that you are there to have your OWN back. And believe it or not, that knowing, that security alone on a subconscious level affects us so deeply when it comes to our drive, encouragement and motivation. If we feel on some level that we cannot trust ourselves and we won’t commit or follow through on things we say we will do, then that diminishes our integrity and sense of self-worth.

So, again start small, focus steady, celebrate big! Change must be believed it can happen as much as it is wanted to happen, so believe in yourself and you are halfway there! Believe that fear is your catalyst for greatness and you will only continue to strengthen your muscle of courage, honor, and self awareness.

Best wishes for a most abundant & joyous 2017 for you and yours!!!
