(ANTIMEDIA) United Kingdom — A new app has been launched by theWorld Food Programme (WFP) to allow smartphone owners to provide valuable nutrition to Syrian refugee children.
The ShareTheMeal app is an initiative of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), and with a simple tap, allows users to digitally share a meal with Syrian refugees.
“Each year, WFP reaches 80 million people with food assistance in around 80 countries. WFP is 100% voluntarily funded, so every donation counts. WFP’s administrative costs are among the lowest in the nonprofit sector – with 90% of donations going directly to WFP operations that are building a world with zero hunger,” the agencyclaims.
One of the current goals of the WFP is to raise funds to feed children who have fled the war in Syria to seek shelter in Jordan’s refugee camps. There are over 630,000 Syrian refugees in Jordan currently registered with the U.N. — although actual numbers are thought to be far higher.
Another goal of the WFP is to provide school meals to 20,000 Syrian children in Jordan’s refugee camps for a full year and furnish them with the vital nutrition to help them focus on their studies and not their empty stomachs.
Once smartphone users download ShareTheMeal, they choose how much they want to contribute — and as little as $0.50 (£0.33) provides a child with enough nutrition for a day.
For $0.50 (£0.33), in emergency situations, children are provided highly nutritious foods like fortified biscuits or other foods that do not require cooking. If circumstances are more stable, WFP school meals include a sweet breakfast with porridge enriched with nutrients, and maize with beans or peas for lunch. Every child receives their own portion and for many, this is the most nutritious — if not the only — meal they will have all day.
This new concept, which allows people all over the world to digitally share their meals in a quick and simple way while having dinner or lunch, is free to download and allows contributors to follow up the impact of their donations.
The app is available globally for iOS and Android users here.
