Natural Feminine Health: Essential Oil Hacks For Women

I think we can agree that being a woman has it’s challenges. In fact, when things are going wrong in our bodies it can almost seem like a cruel joke. Periods, cramps, headaches, yeast infections, hormones – it’s practically a roller coaster ride at times.
This is an area where health hacks are absolutely critical. Marketing people know we women will do (and spend) just about anything to bring these symptoms down to manageable levels so we can get back to being the Wonder Women of our own lives. This means there are a million different products and services offered to us. But how many of these will make us healthier in the long run? How many actually work?
Insanity is often defined as doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.
So let’s cut through the BS and talk about one of the biggest health hacks of all time: essential oils.
These little bottles of goodness are the ultimate health hack.They are easy to use, all natural, affordable, and they work to build our health in the long term as well as the short term. It doesn’t matter where you are at in the realm of healthy living – essential oils will work for you.
So what do we do with them? Let’s explore some common issues we women deal with every month and what essential oils can do to support us through them.
Vaginal Health – This is obviously a very sensitive area. Imbalance here can send any women into some major discomfort. But the good news is that this is an area where essential oils can really shine! When occasional itching or irritation pops up in our pants we can immediately grab the appropriate essential oil blend and go to work to support a healthy vaginal environment. So what do we use for vaginal irritation?
- Rosemary – This is a fantastic oil for lots of different things. To ease or soothe occasional vaginal discomfort simply dilute rosemary essential oil in a carrier oil (olive oil, coconut oil,, almond oil, etc.) and apply topically to the vaginal area. You will feel immediate results. Do NOT use these oils straight – they must be diluted.
- Melaleuca (Tea Tree Oil) – Tea tree oil is commonly used to support a healthy vaginal environment. Instructions are the same as listed for Rosemary Essential Oil.
Oil Tip: Some women find that soaking an organic tampon in heavily diluted essential oil and then inserting the tampon overnight is very helpful for vaginal health. Simply mix your essential oil and carrier oil in a small bowl and soak the tampon for 10-15 minutes with the lid on. Then insert before bed and remove in the morning. Do NOT attempt to do this with pure essential oil – dilution is very important as the oils are very concentrated.
Head Tension – How many women are walking around every day with head tension?? If we only had a nickel for every one, right? Essential oils have been used to ease head tension for a very long time. In fact, there are several oils that are commonly used. So let’s go through them:
- Peppermint Essential Oil – A very popular oil that is good for so many things! Peppermint Essential oil is best applied topically across the forehead, temples, back of neck, and even on the tips of the ears for head tension.
- Tension Blend – This is a lovely blend of several oils that eases head and muscle tension. I gave a roller bottle of this oil to a friend once and she texted me later and said she “felt like she would melt into the couch” after applying to her neck and shoulders! This oil is applied the same way as peppermint for head tension.
- Lavender Essential Oil – Lavender is the ultimate calming oil. But it has many other uses as well. If stress is the culprit behind your head tension, a calming oil like Lavender might be just what you are looking for. Apply topically as described for peppermint or Tension Blend.
- Frankincense Essential Oil – Does your head tension take you to a whole other place? If you have the occasional pulsing pounding head tension accompanied by a visual light show – you might need Frankincense. This oil is applied differently than the others. Apply one drop to the roof of the mouth (the soft part at the back) or under the tongue as soon as you start to notice head tension coming on.
Feel free to mix and match these oils or even to layer them. Layering is simply to apply one oil topically over an area and then to follow it shortly after with another oil. Be sure to inhale the aroma from your hands after applying to get the oils into your system more quickly.
Oil Tip: Essential oils are extremely concentrated. Very small amounts are needed to achieve a health goal. This is part of what makes essential oils so affordable. When I run into people who say they can’t afford the oils or that they go through them very quickly it is likely because they are not properly diluting their oils before use. That’s why I always teach people to utilize roller bottles to dilute their oils – this keeps your costs low and makes using your oils topically very easy! Menstrual Discomfort – This can crop up in a number of ways each month. Cramping, constipation, and even emotional ups and downs are common during our periods. So how do we use oils effectively during our period?
- Basil Essential Oil – this is a fabulous oil to ease those typical monthly cramps associated with our menstrual cycle. Simply dilute and apply topically over the lower abdomen. For extra support apply a heated rice pack or other heat source to the abdomen after applying.
- Women’s Monthly Blend – this is a blend of oils that supports a healthy menstrual cycle. You can apply topically to the wrists or inside of ankles daily for emotional support throughout the month. Or apply topically over the abdomen during times of cramping or bloating associated with your menstrual cycle.
- Digestive Blend – This blend of oils help support healthy digestive function. If you are need of extra digestive support during your cycle – simply apply the digestive blend to the abdomen or bottom of the feet daily (be sure to dilute properly).
Oil Tip: Replace your synthetic chemical based perfumes with essential oils – particularly those that support your emotional and hormonal health. Use the Women’s Monthly Blend or a combination of your favorite oils on your wrists, neck, and chest as needed.
Skin Care – Our hormones greatly impact our skin health. Which means many of us may be spending a fortune on products for clear skin. (I was one of them). Are you tired of your clothes, towels, and sheets being bleached out by your skin care products? I used a particular product line for over 15 years and could not have certain colored sweatshirts, fun colored towels, or even rest my head on my (then) boyfriend’s shoulder for fear of leaving bleach stains. I’ve made the switch from these harsh, synthetic chemical based products and I will never go back!
- Melaleuca (Tea Tree Oil) – This is a powerful oil for supporting clear skin. Mix a roller of this and apply over the whole face (or other areas needing it) daily for preventative support. Or apply topically directly to a troubled area for more direct support.
- Topical Blend – This is a blend of essential oils that supports clear, healthy skin. It is my absolute favorite for daily support. I keep a roller of it in my bathroom and apply topically after I was my face. Then I follow up with a moisturizer. Total game changer for me!
- Anti-Aging Blend – This is another blend that helps support youthful skin. I have seen improvements in the appearance of sun spots and scarring. I apply this oil diluted after the topical blend and before the the moisturizer.
Oil Tip: I found other carrier oils to be a bit greasy for my face. So I now use fractionated coconut oil for my carrier oil for my face blends. It absorbs quickly and easily. It also does not stain our clothes!
