Whereas most men who receive the colorblindness gene are usually just color deficient — meaning they can’t see certain shades of colors, a man named Chris Smelcer hasn’t been able to see any color. In fact, for the past 50 years, Smelcer has only glimpsed the world in black and white. That recently changed, and his reaction to perceiving color is beyond moving.

GoodNewsNetwork reports that for Smelcer’s half-century birthday, he asked his family to give him something special: the gift of color. His family was more than happy to oblige. As can be seen in the video below, everything changed for the 50-year-old when put on a pair of Enchroma glasses, which allow a colorblind individual to perceive the world like an “average” person does.

After putting on the glasses, Smelcer couldn’t help but cry over the sudden confrontation of color that surrounded him. For the first time in his life, he saw the blue hue in his jeans, the green pigment in tree leaves, and the neon color of birthday balloons. All left him in a state of wonder.

Delila Watson Smelcer in the video description: “Chris was so overwhelmed I don’t think he has tears left.”
