Life Is a Soccer Match

by Mohanji

With the FIFA World Cup starting next week, let us understand life in comparison to a soccer match. There are two teams in soccer, each aiming to kick the ball into the opposite goal post. The opposing team, cheered on by its fans, will aim to score a goal and try to block you from scoring. But if you are skillful and in peak form, you can slam the ball into the goal and successfully defend your own goal post.

Similarly, in the game of life, you must prevent the entry of negative influences through thoughts, words and actions into the goal posts of your body, mind and intellect. You need to filter out the negative (opposing team) and let in the positive (own players) thoughts, good words and virtuous actions. You also have to maintain your positivity and goodness (skill and form) all throughout life to its fulfilling end.

You Need Two Teams to Play the Match

Please remember obstacles and obstructions are just your tests. If you are on the field, your job is to score a goal. But you cannot play a match with zero members in the opposition. There must be two teams – the positive and the negative. Don’t expect an open ground without obstructions so you can keep on scoring goals. Then there’s no game and no fun. So please understand this is how life is and don’t be perturbed.

Every Match Has Its Spectators

Some people choose to remain on the sidelines and just comment and critique the players, goals, activities, etc. This is expected.

In life, many spectators will just pass judgments and comments on you and your actions. But you must continue to do what you have to and be good at what you do. This means maintaining a strong defense on the field, while dribbling the ball all the way to the opposite goal post.

In spirituality, the goal post is equivalent to inner silence, i.e., the silence of the mind. The deeper you go in silence, the less you are affected by the world outside. The world will always have a variety of inputs, but you will be impacted only if you are vulnerable or permit things to enter your psyche and affect you.

A Team Is Only As Strong As Its Weakest Player

Indeed, it’s important that you safeguard yourself as best as you can from all negative influences. A single doubt can derail the journey. Self-doubt is the worst doubt – if a player does not believe in his capabilities, he cannot take the ball forward. All players should believe that they can perform well and support each other as a team. But for the team to click, every player should first have faith in himself. Likewise, you should first have intense conviction in your ability to achieve your goals and then execute your tasks.

Cricket offers a similar analogy: the aim of every bowler is to get the batsman out. The aim of every batsman is to score more runs. Similarly, you will face an opposition when you attempt anything. Their aim is to bowl you out of the match. Your job is to score nevertheless. When you have to defend – defend! When you have to hit the ball out of the park – go for it! A sound batsman knows that every incoming ball has the potential to bowl him out. Similarly, you could be thwarted by the very next obstacle. Just stay in the game and play on!

You Have to Sustain Your Performance for the Entire Match

Many people start with great enthusiasm and go through the motions for a certain time. But when something comes along, they get deviated and don’t return. It’s no one’s loss but theirs. If you deviate from your spiritual journey or get caught up with inconsequential worldly affairs, you lose the opportunity and waste time.

So, do not take this life for granted. Use it well to attain the highest silence by increasing your awareness, remaining steadfast on your path and eschewing judgments, comparisons and worldly dramas. This is the best you can do with any lifetime. Remaining steadfast on your path also means detachment from trivial desires. The fewer desires you have, the lighter you become.

To summarize, if you look at life like a soccer match, you must play the game with consistency and skill until the final whistle; else the hostile crowd and the opposing team will not let you win. Focus on yourself, practice harder, have confidence and then shoot for the goal! I wish you all the success.

With Love,

Mohanji
