Join ‘Transition Streets’: Community-Building at the Neighborhood Level

Transition Streets, a neighborhood carbon-reduction and community-building project, really is coming to a neighborhood near you. All across the US Transition groups and allies will be rolling out this 7-part curriculum.  Together with neighbors, we’ll reduce our impacts and strengthen our communities at the same time!

Today marks the day that we launch a collaborative crowdfunding campaign to get the ball rolling.

Introducing Transition Streets

Transition Streets is a tried-and-tested project where we come together with neighbors to implement simple no-cost and low-cost actions. These actions cut household energy use, reduce water and waste, change how we eat and transport ourselves, and strengthen our neighborhoods at the same time.

Transition US is adapting the UK program and will launch the American version of Transition Streets this fall.

How Streets Works:

A handful of neighbors get together for 7 meetings, during which they follow clear and easy steps from a user-friendly workbook.  The focus is on low-cost (or no-cost) actions that result in lowering both expenses and carbon footprint.

A Transition Streets facilitator, someone who has been through training, leads the first meeting to ensure that the sessions get off to a good start.

This popular program has been very successful in Transition Town Totnes, England and beyond.

This project: SAVES MONEY – Households cut their bills by an average of$1,000/year. REDUCES carbon emissions by 1.3 tons! BUILDS COMMUNITY – Just as important were the side benefits: neighbors formed a rich social bond and glimpsed what a low-carbon future might resemble – and they liked it!

Why We Need Transition Streets

Many people take individual actions to reduce their energy use and their consumption of resources, But is it enough? Others want to make changes, but they don’t know how or where to begin. Transition Streets provides an empowering format and an enjoyable process for working together to significantly increase individual and collective impacts, and really make a difference.

Why We Need Funding

-Workbook licensing fee

-Facilitator training

-Adapting the workbook to be U.S. specific

-Data collection tool

-Peer-support TeleSalons
