The blissfully calm Ralph Smart says that he is an “advocate for contrast” because we need all sorts of different emotions in life – not just happiness, but sadness, frustration, anger and more. Simply put, we need to allow ourselves to feel the whole rainbow of our experiences and our emotions. Happiness, he says, is when we drop our resistance to feeling this wide range of experience. It’s accessible, but we often put it to the back burner, because we have a more pressing goal than happiness itself.
