How Your Chakras Relate to Addictions and How to Be Addiction-Free

Hello Beautiful Soul.

I created my video above “on the fly,” so please be sure to read this article too, as it is much more thorough and provides a lot more clarity.

Addictions are a big issue in our society. Understanding them on an energetic level can really aid us in helping ourselves (and others) to beat addictions — both big and small — at the root cause level.

And it’s no coincidence that I used the term “root cause level” above, because the root chakra is the primary cause of addiction.

The root chakra is the stability chakra that relates to our habits and routines. We feel safer when we stick to routine and the root is the safety and security chakra. In the most positive sense, it’s the part of you that is committed, consistent and tenacious. And on the other side of that “coin,” it can cause you to get stuck in unhealthy habits and patterns.

The second element of addiction is a lack of will power. When there is an addiction, the body — and it’s engrained habits — have more control over the situation than your will and spirit.

In other words, when you’re addicted, your body is running the show more than your are! This is due to weakness in the third chakra. The fiery solar plexus chakra is responsible for your will and ability to choose what you truly want in every moment. In a nutshell, it’s your empowerment chakra. Where there is addiction, there is a lack of personal power, and the feeling that you’re being controlled by the addiction.

So, the basic chakra recipe for addiction is:

Overactive Root Chakra + Underactive Solar Plexus Chakra

On top of this basic “recipe,” each different type of addiction has it’s own “flavor” of other chakra influences.

Before we go any further, let me also say this: addictions are just your body and psyche’s way of trying to get your basic needs met. Your body and soul are simply trying to solve an energetic imbalance. So if you are experiencing addiction, please be kind and loving to yourself and your body as you walk through understanding it on an energetic level. If you can stay in a place of gratitude, self-love and acceptance (after all, your body and psyche were doing their best!), then you can heal any addiction for good.

True healing can never begin from a place of self-judgment and negativity. Healing always comes from self-love and self-respect.

Your upper chakras are more spiritually-oriented and relatively free from the auspices of the body, so most addictions are almost exclusively related to the realm of your 3 lower (physical) chakras: root, sacral and solar plexus.

Look at our culture’s 3 biggest drug addictions and you’ll see that they each represent one of the lower chakras:

Alcohol (a depressant) = Root Chakra (oppiates like heroine and oxycodone fall in this category too)

Marijuana (a psychoactive drug) = Sacral Chakra

Cocaine/Crack (uppers) = Solar Plexus Chakra

Isn’t that interesting? We are all just trying to meet the needs of these lower chakras and this desire can drive us to find quick fixes that take the body right to the way we want to feel, rather than doing the longer term work of fully opening our chakras with consistent energy healing.

My personal belief has always been that if your body can get into a particular state while experiencing a drug, then it can probably learn how to access that same state energetically — without the drug. But of course, a drink, a smoke or a pill is much easier and quicker than doing repetitive energy work to make these heightened states our new norm.

I’m going to share some of the possible energy factors behind different addictions now, and please keep in mind that there is an interpretive element involved. Very few things in life are cut-and-dried, so please don’t take it as gospel. Feel into my interpretation, and then adjust and create your own interpretation from what you know about each addiction and each chakra.

Alcohol = overactive root + sometimes overactive solar plexus/thinking without true confidence — which means the alcohol is used to put out the fake fire of bravado and over-vigilance so one can relax

Marijuana = overactive root, overactive sacral, underactive solar plexus,

Cocaine/uppers = overactive root, underactive solar plexus (coffee is a light, socially accepted version of this)

Sex = overactive root, overactive sacral, under active solar plexus, underactive heart

Food = overactive (or normal) root, underactive solar plexus (note: this is just a magnified version of the base recipe for addiction — I included normal root in this because we have to eat food every day, so we already have a habit of it).

Porn (males) =  overactive root (because the root is related to the testes and all men have a strong biological urge to procreate ) plus weak sacral (since sacral is the real intimacy chakra that honors the feminine) and overactive OR underactive solar plexus, because the fire of the third chakra can lead to abuse or dominance when not balanced with the others. Men with EITHER weak or overactive solar plexus may enjoy watching other men dominate women. Also, ALL the upper (spiritual) chakras would tend to be weak with a porn addiction, because when a man opens all his upper chakras, he sees sex as sacred and his Goddess as a beautiful extension of his own Divine Feminine.

Shopping = overactive root, underactive solar plexus

Gambling = overactive root + underactive solar plexus + underactive or overactive throat (this one is very widely open to interpretation, so please weigh in!)

The most immediate way to start correcting the imbalances that lead to all addictions is to strengthen your solar plexus and lessen the emphasis on your root chakra by doing more upper chakra work (especially strengthen your 3rd eye and crown that represent your connection to your Higher Self and the Divine).

Will you please update the article to include Cigarette smoking / nicotine? This is an addiction as well and I’m hopeful that we consider it just like any other drug in helping to heal. Thanks for the information. Fascinating and inspires hope in me.
