Upon walking into the Edeka supermarket in Hamburg, Germany, customers were surprised to notice that most of the shelves were empty. At first, people just thought the store just forgot to restock. However, the truth is, Edeka deliberately emptied its shelves of foreign products to make a point about racism.

Shoppers were informed of this when they saw multiple signs around the store. A sign near  cheese display read, “So empty is a shelf without foreigners.” Another read, “This shelf is quite boring without variety.”

For an entire day, Edeka opted to sell only German food to make a point about the need for ethnic diversity. As Bored Panda reports, there were no Greek olives, no Spanish tomatoes, and little of anything else typically found in a modern household.

Said an Edeka spokesman, “Edeka stands for diversity, and we produce a wide range of food in our assortment, which is produced in the different regions of Germany. But it is together with products from other countries that we create the unique diversity that our customers value.”
