In this real-life model of forest resilience and regeneration, Professor Suzanne Simard shows that all trees in a forest ecosystem are interconnected via a vast underground tree root systems that are kind of like giant brains. And, like the neurons in our own brains, trees send messages through their roots, with the largest, oldest, “mother trees” serving as hubs. Simard says that trees aren't only communicating, but they’re also sending resources back and forth to help out other trees — even if they are a different kind of tree. This underground exchange of nutrients increases the survival of younger trees linked into the network of old trees.
