ASAP Science addresses the question: what if everyone on the planet lived like Americans?

Some of the facts presented:

  • There are currently 7.5 billion people alive on Earth, of which 323 million live in America (which is less than 5% of the world population).
  • Americans drive an average of 13,476 miles per year, which is the most in the world.
  • 20% of American meals are consumed in a vehicle.
  • Americans eat an average of 8 ounces per day of meat, which is double the world average.
  • Americans kill and eat 10 billion animals each year, which is 15% of the world consumption.
  • The average American drinks 403 coca cola products per year, compared to the world average which is 92.
  • The U.S. has the highest average caloric intake, sugar intake, and fat intake.
  • Americans produce on average 1,609 pounds of garbage per year, which means that the U.S. produces 40% of the world’s waste.
  • The lifestyle of an American requires about 10 liters of oil per day, while some other countries consume even more.
  • The average person in the world uses 2.7 global hectares of natural resources per year, while the average American uses 6.8 global hectares per year.
  • If everyone on the planet lived like Americans, it would be catastrophic. We would need 4.1 Earth’s to sustain everyone living like an American.
