How to be Empowered and Stay Calm in A Crisis [Video]

This video, How to be Empowered and Stay Calm in a Crisis is in response to a comment on my video about how to let go of fear.

“When you have a strong, visceral in-the-moment reaction of fear to something, how do you calm your survival mechanism enough to think clearly and consciously?”

I also refer to another video on the power of awareness.

Unless we train ourself, our instinctive reaction to a ‘fearful’ situation is to freeze or get caught up in the ‘fearful’ situation or the problem.

When you train yourself to BE in the present moment and aware of your thoughts and feelings at all times you can immediately identify when you are getting feelings of anxiety or fear, and even if you’re in a really dangerous situation, you can practice shifting your attention from the cause of the fear, problem or danger to the perfect outcome that you want in that situation.

As you practice this more and more you become more and more proficient. You can compare it with learning to drive a car. When you start you have to consciously think of every step involved in driving safely – the right direction, the right gear, awareness of the traffic around you, the road conditions. With practice, you become more and more proficient and your driving becomes automatic – you become unconsciously competent.

The process is illustrated by the Four Stages of Learning articulated by Martin M. Broadwell in 1969:

Stage 1 Unconscious Incompetence

At this stage, you don’t know what you don’t know. In the case of fear, you don’t know that you have the ability to learn how to deal with a fearful situation in an empowered and conscious way.

Stage 2 Conscious Incompetence

At this stage, you realize there is a way to deal with these situations, but you don’t yet know how. So you are now aware that there is a way to deal with fear rather than react instinctively or get stuck in the fearful situation.

Stage 3 Conscious Competence

You have learned how to do something but you have to use concentration and conscious effort to achieve results. You now know that you can deal with fear by shifting your attention from the problem to the outcome you want to achieve but you still have to do it consciously.

Stage 4 Unconscious Competence

You have practiced so much that the skill has become second nature, or automatic. When fear arises, you are able to remain calm and in control of your response and IMMEDIATELY shift your attention to manifesting the ideal outcome, rather than compounding the problem by remaining focused on it.

To illustrate this concept, I share the story about when my Jack Russell was attacked and severely injured by a pack of dogs.

With practice, you too can develop the same ability to be in control in even the most challenging and dangerous situations and when you do, it’s a life-changer. You become a master manifester.
