A dog walked nearly 200 miles to find the woman who cared for her after a hit-and-run in Russia.

The female canine, named Shavi, was living as a stray on the streets of Rostov-on-Don in southwest Russia's Rostov Oblast region last winter when she was hit by a driver, who then fled the scene.

She was left to die at the side of the road, with several serious injuries including two broken legs.

A short while later, the frozen dog was rescued by two passersby, who took her for veterinary treatment before launching an online appeal to find someone to nurse the animal back to health.

Local Nina Baranovskaya, 26, was the only one who replied, according to Russian media.

As soon as Shavi had undergone an operation on her hind legs, Ms Baranovskaya picked up the dog and took her back to her Rostov-on-Don home, where she helped her to learn to walk again.

She played with the dog on a daily basis and before long had taught her several basic commands.

Because Shavi had suffered psychological trauma in the crash, Ms Baranovskaya was forced to buy diapers for her – and had to comfort her whenever they came across strangers or cars in the street.

However, Ms Baranovskaya, who has a young daughter and several other pets, was not able to care for Shavi for the long-term due to her job, her small flat and her family commitments.

She found the pet a loving home with friends near the border with the Voronezh Oblast region, around 185 miles away. But just a few days later, the dog apparently went missing.

Shavi's new owners called up Ms Baranovskaya in a panic and told her Shavi had vanished.

Ms Baranovskaya hoped the dog would be rescued or would find her own way back to her friends' house – but was shocked when Shavi turned up in the most unexpected place two weeks later.

Yes! Have made a comment. This story reminds me of the movie “The Incredible Journey” about 2 dogs and a cat who travelled from one side of the United States to the other side to be with their owners who had relocated and left them in the care of relatives. I think it was based on a true story? But this one really touches the heart. Truly beautiful <3

Such a heartwarming story <3 The dog identified so strongly with the woman who nursed it back to health that it couldn't bear to be apart from her! I was so glad to read that Nina is looking for a larger apartment so she can take care of this beautiful dog. I hope they have many happy years together 🙂

Have a horrible neighbor that “took our cat for a ride”. Wife was heartbroken . Cat showed up over 2 weeks later at our door filled with ticks and fleas and emaciated. It was a miracle she found her way back . I yelled over the fence to the neighbor “cat naper” and he replied with a “Meow!!”
