DARPA Brain Memory StimulatorMemory loss as a result of dementia or as a result of a traumatic brain inury can be absolutely devastating to not only the victim but also the family members left to care for them.Sadly there have only been a limited number of treatments offered for these conditions which have been successful in slowing down the disease process. Still, there has been little success on reversing the effects of the injury or the disease symptoms.

These debilitating conditions can change someone’s personality and are also known to cause:

– Difficulty performing more than one task at a time

– Trouble solving problems

– Forgetting recent events or conversations

– Personality changes which include impulsiveness or anger

– And, regrettably with late stage dementia, Alzheimer’s disease can develop

Sadly, the recent US wars have brought on a magnitude of tragedy to families of lost soldiers. Another silent epidemic that has caused much suffering among our soldiers has been head injuries that have occurred while serving.

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), often called the most common injury among the soldiers serving in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, takes place when a sudden trauma or head injury interferes and impacts the function of the brain.

The most reported causes of TBI include damage caused by explosive devices, falls and vehicle or motorcycle accidents.

The Defense Advanced Research Agency (DARPA) and US military researchers claim they’re in the process of developing a new brain implant that shows promise in restoring certain mental faculties. Although this could appear like a miracle to millions of people around the world, it does not go without raising ethical concerns.

The brain is a very sensitive organ and we still do not know how the idea of implanting anything in this complex structure could impact the personality of the individual, not to mention the military’s motive for developing such a device.

According to AFP, this will take about four years to complete as they envision it and is part of a $100 million program by US President Barak Obama to research, gain and develop better insight and understanding of the human brain.

The idea of people with Alzheimer’s having a second chance at a longer and more functional life is extremely exciting. However, we have to question how and why such a device would be used for our soldiers, restoring memory and function in a young soldier’s daily life would be remarkable. Does the military have other plans?

Arthur Caplan, a medical ethicist at New York University’s Langone Medical Center, has voiced strong concerns about this project. He believes the intention of manipulating the brain raises obvious ethical questions. He is quoted as saying:

“When you fool around with the brain you are fooling around with personal identity. The cost of altering the mind is you risk losing a sense of self, and that is a new kind of risk we never faced.”

In theory, this new miracle technology, if developed and actually implanted in the military, could change the innate personality of a human being, with Caplan commenting that it could cause our service men and women to become more violent and callous.
