The Cookie Thief

Luminita Saviuc | Purpose Fairy

How many times did it happen to you to know something for sure and to believe that what you knew was the truth, the only truth, the supreme truth and later on to realize how wrong you were? I really believe there isn’t a single person on this planet that did not experience something like this.

We like to think we know everything and we like to know that we are always right. This is who we are, this is what we all do. This is one of the reasons that many of us get stuck and can’t really grow, can’t really improve themselves, their relationships, their environments and their lives. This is one of the many reasons we need to keep an open mind and be aware that what we know might not be the truth and what we know is very little and that as long as we will live, we will be ignorants.

We can’t be experts in all the areas of life and we need to accept this. We need to listen to what others have to say, we need to listen more and talk less. There is so much we can learn from being quiet, there is so much to learn from listening what others have to say. Let others share their ideas with you, let others share their beliefs and knowledge with you and try not to look for ways to criticize them. Try not to laugh at what they might have to say if what they tell you is not in accordance with your beliefs. You never know what truths you might find out later. You never know. I now want to share with you this beautiful poem of Valerie Cox called The Cookie Thief and I really hope we will all learn something from it. Enjoy:

She hunted for a book in the airport shops.

Bought a bag of cookies and found a place to drop.

She was engrossed in her book but happened to see,

That the man sitting beside her, as bold as could be.

Grabbed a cookie or two from the bag in between,

Which she tried to ignore to avoid a scene.

So she munched the cookies and watched the clock,

As the gutsy cookie thief diminished her stock.

She was getting more irritated as the minutes ticked by,

Thinking, “If I wasn’t so nice, I would blacken his eye.”

With each cookie she took, he took one too,

When only one was left, she wondered what he would do.

With a smile on his face, and a nervous laugh,

He took the last cookie and broke it in half.

He offered her half, as he ate the other,

She snatched it from him and thought… oooh, brother.

This guy has some nerve and he’s also rude,

Why he didn’t even show any gratitude!

She had never known when she had been so galled,

And sighed with relief when her flight was called.

She gathered her belongings and headed to the gate,

Refusing to look back at the thieving ingrate.

She boarded the plane, and sank in her seat,

Then she sought her book, which was almost complete.

As she reached in her baggage, she gasped with surprise,
