I have been a reader of the I Ching (pronounced E Ching) since about 2012 and have found it to be full of wisdom and guidance for achieving higher consciousness, particularly in challenging times. If you aren’t familiar with it, it is a book, but also an oracle.

As this is an ancient Chinese Oracle, some translations can be hard to interpret which is why I use Brian Browne Walker’s translation/interpretation, which is easy to understand. The book is available on Amazon (affiliate link) or as an app for Android and IPhone.

A Brief Explanation of the I Ching – Book of Changes

The I Ching is consulted by throwing 3 coins and assigning numerical values to each coin. Heads are counted as 2 and tails are counted as one. You add up the value of the three coins and if the sum is an odd number, it is an unbroken line, if it’s an even number it is a broken line. You throw the coins 6 times to create a hexagram working from the bottom up. The broken lines are known as ‘transforming lines’ and produce a second hexagram which provides additional instruction relating to the first (or primary) hexagram. If there are no broken lines, only one hexagram will be produced.

Like any oracle card reading, hold in your mind the question you want to ask or the guidance you seek as you are throwing the coins.

The explanation of each hexagram refers to ‘the Sage’, ‘the Creative’, ‘the Higher Power’ but you can substitute those terms for whatever name feels comfortable to you.

Here is my reading for the week of February 13th to February 19th.

Primary Hexagram

Hexagram 5: HSÜ

WAITING (NOURISHMENT)

To wait with a proper attitude
invites the assistance of the Higher Power.

There is a situation at hand that cannot be corrected by force or external effort. The Creative will provide the solution to one who waits with a correct attitude. This is a time for patience and careful attention to inner truth.

Do not give in to doubt and agitation now. You are not meant to wait in a state of desperate longing but in one of patient inner strength. Without certainty in the power of the truth, success is impossible. Attempts to force a change, rather than allowing it to mature naturally, will only cause misfortune.

You would be wise to strengthen and reaffirm your reliance on the Creative. When you indulge in fear and doubt, you flood the arena where the Higher Power is attempting to work. Your principal responsibility in life is to keep this arena – your own consciousness – free of negative influences.

By accepting things as they are and not making fruitless comparisons to the situations of others or some imagined ideal, one engages the power of the Creative. If one then remains balanced, modest, and independent, good fortune will come to hand.

FIRST LINE

A challenge lies ahead. Ready yourself by deepening the stillness within. Anxious anticipation only weakens your abilities.

SIXTH LINE

A solution appears that at first glance seems strange. Waiting with an open mind and a quiet heart allows you to accept truth in whatever form it arrives.

Secondary Hexagram

Hexagram 57: SUN

THE GENTLE (THE PENETRATING, WIND)

Consistent correctness turns every

The image of this hexagram is that of a gentle wind dispersing storm clouds. A wind that changes direction often, even a very powerful one, will disperse nothing – it only stirs up the sky. The wind that causes real change is the one that blows consistently in the same direction. There is an important lesson for us in this example.

When faced with a difficult problem to resolve or a goal we wish to achieve, we often are tempted to take striking and energetic actions. Though it is possible to achieve temporary results in this fashion, they tend to collapse when we cannot sustain the vigorous effort. More enduring accomplishments are won through gentle but ceaseless penetration, like that of a soft wind blowing steadily in the same direction. The truth of the Sage penetrates to us in this way, and this hexagram comes now to remind you that this is how you should seek to penetrate others.

The advice given to you by the I Ching is threefold. First, establish a clear goal; the wind that continually changes direction has no real effect. Second, apply the principle of gentle penetration to yourself; by eliminating your own inferior qualities you earn an influence over others. Third, avoid aggressive or ambitious maneuvers now; these are rooted in desire and fear and will only serve to block the aid of the Creative. The desirable influence is the one that flows naturally from maintaining a proper attitude.

In your interactions with others, bend like the willow. By remaining acceptable, balanced, accepting, and independent, and by steadily moving in a single direction, you gain the clarity and strength that make possible a series of great successes.
