SHOCKER: Americans Don’t Trust News Media

Americans trust news media less than ever, according to a new poll by Gallup. Confidence in newspapers is less than half of its 1979 peak of 51 percent, while trust in television news hit a new low of 18 percent. Is this due to the rise of infotainment, media concentration or another reason altogether? RT’s Ameera David finds out by discussing the issue with Abby Martin, host of Breaking the Set, and producer Manuel Rapalo.

How Five American Companies Control What You Think

Heavy distortions and suppressions of information regarding current Ukrainian events are appearing in US media. You might wonder how so many different news sources could all completely avoid mentioning that the US government is consciously supporting two radical far-right parties, Svoboda and Right Sector, which are in control of key positions in the coup-installed new ‘government’ of the Ukraine. You might also wonder why almost all the US mass media news sources could conceal – with vague phrases like ”the sequence of events is not clear’ and similar techniques – the role of these extremist organization in murdering dozens of unarmed civilians in the past few days in southeastern Ukraine. The explanation is surprisingly simple: There aren’t numerous US mass media news sources at all; there are just five. Five giant corporations control 90 percent of US mass media. And direct links connect all five of these media conglomerates to the political establishment and the economic and political power-elites of the United States.

Glenn Greenwald: U.S. Corporate Media is “Neutered, Impotent and Obsolete”

Glenn Greenwald reflects on the Pulitzer Prize, adversarial journalism and the corporate media’s response to his reporting on Edward Snowden’s leaked National Security Agency documents. “We knew that once we started publishing not one or two stories, but dozens of stories … that not just the government, but even fellow journalists were going to start to look at what we were doing with increasing levels of hostility and to start to say, ‘This doesn’t actually seem like journalism anymore,’ because it’s not the kind of journalism that they do,” Greenwald says. “It doesn’t abide by these unspoken rules that are designed to protect the government.”

CNN, FOX & MSNBC Are Losing Viewers Left and Right

While cable news’ attempt to exploit missing planes to gain viewers may increase ratings in the short term, the Pew Research Center’s “State of the Media” report doesn’t paint a rosy picture of the health of the industry overall. CNN, FOX and MSNBC have been suffering declining primetime viewership as more consumers turning to online sources for news, while newspapers are shedding jobs in order to stay in the black. With questionable practices by cable news network’s becoming more prevalent, does the industry stand a chance against online media? RT’s Marina Portnaya offers analysis along with Lindsay France.

BBC ‘total fabrication from beginning to end’ of Syria ‘atrocity’. Television News, The Stage Play

Television News, The Stage Play

As long as television news gives viewers a small hit of magic, it stays in business. The magic is the stage play, the anchors and reporters are the actors, and the whole show, as it passes into eyes and ears, imparts a dreamlike quality. They can twist the truth, burn it, hide it, step on it, reverse it; it doesn’t matter. If the US government hires, supports, and arms terrorists, the news can claim the government is doing everything possible to fight against terrorism—including the installation of a massive Surveillance State. The absurd contradictions are simply ignored.
