Since genetically modified foods hit the market in the 1990s, allergies have skyrocketed. Studies compiled by Jeffrey M. Smith, head of the Institute for Responsible Technology and author of “Genetic Roulette: The Documented Health Risks of Genetically Engineered Foods” show that common GM ingredients – in addition to synthetic chemical food additives [See 1, 2, 3] – may be compromising the health of ordinary people in the United States and across the world.
“In 2005, the FDA granted approval for a promising new cancer-fighting drug called Nexavar. Bayer took it to market shortly thereafter, and it is currently an approved treatment for late-stage kidney and liver cancer. That is, so long as you live in the developed world. In a recently published interview in Bloomberg Businessweek, Bayer CEO Marijn Dekkers said that his company’s drug isn’t for poor people.
Abby Martin speaks with Scott Kinnear, director of the Safe Food Foundation, about the case of Steve Marsh, an Australian organic farmer who lost his organic certification after his crops were contaminated by Monsanto GM seeds from a neighboring farm. As a result, Marsh and his family are no longer able to sell their product on the organic market and have lost a great deal of their income.
The Organic Consumers Association is reporting that the Grocery Manufacturer’s Association — the mega corporate lobby group that represents 300 companies and way more than just grocery stores — is using a talking points memo to basically misinform and intimidate our legislators with threats of lawsuits should they even attempt to back a GMO labeling law in their state.

Remember a researcher named Gilles-Eric Seralini, his 2012 GMO study, and the controversy that swirled around it? He fed rats GMOs, in the form of Monsanto’s Roundup Ready corn, and they developed tumors. Some died. Eight years prior to Seralini, Monsanto also did a rat-tumor-GMO study and published it in the very same journal. Monsanto’s study showed there were no tumor problems in the rats. But here’s the explosive kicker. Monsanto used the same strain of rats that Seralini did and same number of rats (10). And nobody complained about it.

The Obama administration announced last week that it expects to approve corn and soybeans that have been genetically engineered by Dow Chemical company to tolerate the toxic herbicide — 2,4-D. They are planning this approval despite the fact that use of this herbicide is associated with increased rates of deadly immune system cancers, Parkinson’s disease, endocrine disruption, birth defects, and many other serious kinds of illness and reproductive problems.
