Revised Laws and Urban Farming Projects Provide New Opportunities for Urban Gardeners

Growing your own garden or participating in a community garden is a great way to improve your health, help build a sustainable food system, and support our planet as it struggles to make room for increasing numbers of us. Food grown in your own garden is fresher, more nutritious, and tastes better than store-bought food—and you can’t beat the price! Urban gardens are key to saving energy, protecting water quality and topsoil, and promoting biodiversity and beautifying densely populated communities. Remember, plants are our richest source of natural medicine.

Rand Paul Brings Class-Action Lawsuit Against the NSA

The National Security Agency is under fire in a new way, as Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) spearheads a class-action lawsuit that claims the secretive spy agency violated Americans’ constitutional rights with its bulk metadata collection programs. “We think everybody in America who has a cell phone would be eligible for this class-action suit,” Paul said. In the meantime, the NSA is also facing questions from Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) as to whether they are spying on members of Congress the way they are spying on world leaders. RT’s Meghan Lopez discusses the latest NSA developments with Rachel Levinson-Waldman, counsel to the Brennan Center’s Liberty and National Security Program.

‘The Country You Destroyed’: A Letter to George W. Bush

Ralph Nader to George W Bush: Today, Iraq remains a country (roughly the size and population of Texas) you destroyed, a country where over a million Iraqis, including many children and infants (remember Fallujah?) lost their lives, millions more were sickened or injured, and millions more were forced to become refugees, including most of the Iraqi Christians. Iraq is a country rife with sectarian strife that your prolonged invasion provoked into what is now open warfare.

FBI Admits It’s Not Really About Law Enforcement Any More; Ignores Lots Of Crimes To Focus On Creating Fake Terror Plots

A couple years ago, it was revealed that the FBI noted in one of its “counterterrorism training manuals” that FBI agents could “bend or suspend the law and impinge upon the freedoms of others,” which seemed kind of odd for a government agency who claimed its “primary function” was “law enforcement.” You’d think that playing by the rules would be kind of important. However, as John Hudson at Foreign Policy has noted, at some point last summer, the FBI quietly changed its fact sheet, so that it no longer says that “law enforcement” is its primary function, replacing it with “national security.”

Chris Hedges: The Last Gasp of American Democracy

This is our last gasp as a democracy. The state’s wholesale intrusion into our lives and obliteration of privacy are now facts. And the challenge to us—one of the final ones, I suspect—is to rise up in outrage and halt this seizure of our rights to liberty and free expression. If we do not do so we will see ourselves become a nation of captives.

TEPCO To Siphon Off Radioactive Water From Tunnels Under Fukushima Plant

The operator of Japan’s crippled Fukushima Daiichi atomic plant plans to start cleaning underground tunnels believed to be part of the sources of radioactive materials poisoning the groundwater in the area. The Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) will first block the flow of tainted water between the damaged buildings and the tunnels. Workers will begin burying pipes in the ground to carry refrigerants in January, NHK TV network reported. In April, they are set to start draining the contaminated water from the tunnels.

Bone-Chilling ‘Polar Vortex’ Storm Brings Midwest Cities To a Standstill

Cities across the US Midwest on Monday are grinding to a halt as a deadly “polar vortex” descends, promising to deliver heavy snowfall and potentially record-breaking cold temperatures. An Arctic blast of freezing, dense air known as a “polar vortex” was expected to knock down temperatures and affect more than 140 million Americans beginning Monday, with the frigid temperatures made more severe by the wind chill factor, a reading that tells what it feels like outside when wind speeds are taken into account.

Ronald Reagan and the Occultist: The Amazing Story Of The Thinker Behind His Sunny Optimism

A 1944 book by Manley P. Hall, “The Secret Destiny of America,” influenced the politics of Ronald Reagan, who was then a middling movie actor gravitating toward politics. Hall’s concise volume described how America was the product of a “Great Plan” for religious liberty and self-governance, launched by a hidden order of ancient philosophers and secret societies.
