‘Mudra’ means ‘seal’ or ‘gesture’ in Sanskrit. Mudras can be used for meditation, easing aches and pains, opening and balancing your chakras, and to gain awareness for the subtle energies in your body. Most of you have probably heard of the ‘Namaste’ mudra, known as the Anjali mudra, where you bring your palms together in a prayer fashion over your heart, and the Gyan mudra, where your thumb touches your index finger and most accompany with ‘ohm’. What most don’t know are that there are hundreds of mudras!

Think of your hand as a control panel to your body. Putting pressure on a certain part of your hand can affect a certain part of your body. Now, think of your fingers as circuits. When you touch one to another in any way, you are opening up a channel for energy to flow. Combining your mudras with meditation and visualization can help you to acknowledge and feel the energy running through and around you, as well as help you to balance your chakras.

1. Gyan Mudra

The Gyan Mudra is when you touch the tip of your index finger to the tip of your thumb. It encourages wisdom, creativity, and concentration.

2. Apan Mudra

Touch the tips of your ring and middle fingers to the tip of your thumb. The Apan mudra helps to eliminate toxins in your body, stimulates the liver, and stifles urinary problems.

3. Shuni Mudra

Touch the tip of your middle finger to the tip of your thumb. This mudra is known as the seal of patience. It boosts your patience, confidence, and courage.

4. Vaayu Mudra

Fold your index finger down and keep it in place with your thumb over it. This mudra invokes calmness – emotionally, physically, and mentally. Use it for an overactive mind or if you are angry or frustrated.

5. Prana Mudra

Touch the tips of your ring and pinky fingers to the tip of your thumb. This mudra helps with vision and vitality, promoting good health and a steady flow of your life force.
