Do Statins Cause Memory Loss?

The list of side effects of cholesterol reducing medications known as statins may now include depression and memory loss according to the Cochrane Library’s study.  Scientists found that statin testing giving safe results was done by the pharmaceutical companies and more patients are being prescribed the drug than necessary.

Data extracted from 14 drug trials conducted on 34,000 patients revealed that in some patients statins may prevent strokes and heart attacks but it does not substantiate those with no previous history of heart disease should take the drugs safely.  “Adverse effects are not included in the trials,” said lead researcher Dr. Fiona Taylor. Millions of patients are taking statins in spite of the study.

The British Medical Journal published a study stating that for every heart attack that statins prevented there are two people that get liver damage, kidney problems, muscle fatigue or cataracts and less than three percent of statin users get any improvements whatsoever.
