Ben Swann Reality Check takes a look at the case of U.S. Marine Brandon Raub who is being held in a mental hospital in Virginia over Facebook posts.
Last Thursday night, Marine Brandon Raub was arrested in his home. But, he was not taken to jail. He was taken to a mental hospital, where he was given a 15-minute psychological exam before being held over the weekend. On Monday, after 72 hours, Raub was given a hearing at the hospital in front of a board who determines whether or not someone can be held in a mental institution – regardless of what they have or have not done. The board ruled that Raub will be held for at least the next 30 days.
Raub is a straight-A student, has no criminal record, served two tours of duty in Afghanistan, and has no history of mental illness. So, what did he do that would cause him to be held in a mental hospital against his will?
His mother was told that it was because of what he posted on Facebook. His first amendment rights have been violated.
Watch this video for more details on what Raub posted.
