The quit-smoking drug Chantix is getting a bad reputation according to a recent report. Some users of Chantix are committing violent aggressive acts. The dangers have actually caused restrictions for police, military, and other jobs that involve carrying firearms according to Thomas J. Moore, a senior drug safety scientist at a nonprofit consumer watchdog group known as the Institute for Safe Medication Practices.
Concerns began in 2007 when a musician in Dallas began to take Chantix then started adopting aggressive behavior and even abusive behavior. He was shot and killed while trying to kick in a door of his girlfriend’s neighbor. The FDA requires that a medication guide be given to users even when the prescription is refilled. The package insert tells the user that some people have had adverse effects to the medication such as suicidal thoughts, agitation, and hostility and to get medical help if that occurrs.
Some of the other cases include a 42 year old man punching a stranger at a bowling alley, a 21 year old woman taunted her mother with a shotgun, a 21 year old woman began to beat up her boyfriend, and a 46 year old man had suicidal thought and wanted to kill his family.
