In 2008, Obama vowed to rebuild America’s moral standing and break from the policies of his predecessor, George W. Bush. Four years later, America is still at war, 23 million citizens are unemployed, and most of the national security policies established by Bush have continued unabated or have been expanded. While imprisonment without trail and spying without warrant continue, Obama has now added assassination, which is not a moral improvement.
Under Obama’s leadership, Guantanamo Bay remains open, the Patriot Act has been renewed, warrantless wiretapping has been extended, targeted killings have been justified, and drone strikes have been publicly acknowledged. To Obama’s credit, enhanced interrogation, like water boarding, has been banned.
At the 2012 Democratic National Convention, Obama said Americans were ‘absolutely better off than four years ago, but the country’s growing national debt, unemployment and broken promises have plagued his campaign.
