New Zealander, Shane Blind has given container living a whole new, chic look and a very affordable price tag. By simply adding two side pods and an attractive “bay” window, he’s turned a too-narrow shipping container into a lovely, modern space that gives off a more spacious vibe.
Blind says the most important element when converting a shipping container is to make sure you have really great insulation.
Also, he says, little tweaks make a huge difference – like shifting angles slightly, rounding off corners, and color-coding different areas to give the illusion of more separate spaces like a regular home.
Blind also points out that you can never design the whole home on paper, because you’ll only know the finishing touches when you get your hands on the materials while you’re building. So staying a little bit open while building is important too.
And he seems like the right guy to take advice from, because not only did he create a chic, modern and functional space, but he did it for $28,000 New Zealand dollars, which translates into under $20,000 U.S.
And he enjoyed the entire process. “It was really fun to design and build… the whole project was great,” says Blind.
In all fairness, the unit was built as a guesthouse for visiting friends and relatives, so it’s lacking some things that would be needed for longer term living, like storage/closet space and a full kitchen. But there is clearly wall space in the bedroom that could be used for storage units and the kitchen has room for a small fridge, toaster over and two top burner for cooking.
