Have Doctors Cured HIV With Stem Cells

Stem Cells May Cure Leukemia and HIV/AIDS

Doctors believe they have cured one man of HIV/AIDS after getting a cell transplant in 2007 according to the journal, Blood.  The man is an American residing in Germany who became HIV-positive and developed leukemia.  He began chemotherapy then had a stem cell transplant from an individual that had a scarce genetic mutation which makes them nearly impervious to HIV.

Doctors are hoping the disappearance of the two diseases will prevail.  One doctor, Dr. Anthony Fauci has been researching HIV/AIDS for almost three decades and though he likes the results he feels this is not a reliable form of treatment because you have to find a compatible donor as he tells FoxNews.com,

“It’s hard enough to get a good compatible match for a transplant like this but you also have to find compatible donor that has this genetic defect, and this defect is only found in 1 percent of the Caucasian population and zero percent in the black population.  This is very rare.”

Though the treatment may be impractical for the first time it does open the door for new alternative treatments and cures for HIV and AIDS.
