(Eurekalert) A detailed description of development of the first practical artificial leaf — a milestone in the drive for sustainable energy that mimics the process, photosynthesis, that green plants use to convert water and sunlight into energy — appears in the ACS journal Accounts of Chemical Research. The article notes that unlike earlier devices, which [...]
(ThomasNet) Nature-based designs are used not only for creating products, but solving challenges in business and society. This technique, known as biomimicry, is reshaping the way we think about innovation and creative problem-solving. Here we look at biomimicry’s underlying principles, how it can be harnessed to improve companies and successful examples of nature-based design.
While there [...]
(Scientific American) When a retired fisherman called to report that about 1,500 dolphins had washed up dead on Peru’s northern coast, veterinarian Carlos Yaipén’s first reaction was, “That’s impossible.”
But when Yaipén traveled up the coast last week, he counted 615 dead dolphins along a 135-kilometer stretch of coastline.
Now, the death toll could be as high [...]
(New York Times) Scientists have been alarmed and puzzled by declines in bee populations in the United States and other parts of the world. They have suspected that pesticides are playing a part, but to date their experiments have yielded conflicting, ambiguous results.
In Thursday’s issue of the journal Science, two teams of researchers published studies [...]
(Discovery News) An unprecedented open society of bottlenose dolphins has just been identified in Western Australia. Most mammals, including humans, live in areas with boundaries. This population of dolphins, described in the latest Proceedings of the Royal Society B, has no such limits, even though dolphin relationships can be incredibly intense.
“Other mammals with complex social [...]
(Good) The future of urban farming is under construction in Sweden as agricultural design firm Plantagon works to bring a 12-year-old vision to life: The city of Linköping will soon be home to a 17-story “vertical greenhouse.”
The greenhouse will serve as a regenerating food bank, tackling urban sprawl while making the city self-sufficient. Plantagon predicts [...]
(TodayOnline) A new anesthetic gel made from a plant found deep in the Peruvian rainforest could replace the dentist’s needle and bring relief to patients with a phobia of jabs, researchers claim.

Just days after news surfaced about the dead dolphins washing up on the Cape Cod shore, over 260 dolphins were found dead off the Chiclayo shore of Peru. Dolphins were scattered on 66-miles of shoreline north of Lima.
Unlike the Cape Cod incident, where dolphins continue to beach themselves requiring rescue, the Peru dolphins [...]
This NatGeo documentary examines feral children, who are children that have grown up with minimal human contact, or even none at all. While stories of children being “raised by wolves” are exagerated, there have been a few documented cases of a child having grow up alone in the wild. Whether abandoned by parents or runaways [...]

Amazing video: after being freed from a fishing net by rescuers, a young humpback whale celebrates and shows appreciation by putting on a spectacular show. Michael Fishbach, co-founder of The Great Whale Conservancy (GWC), narrates his encounter with the whale, nicknamed Valentina, because it happened on Valentine’s Day.
They are calling it, “Victory in the Southern Ocean Day.” The Sea Shepherd has successfully harassed and intimidated the Nisshin Maru factory ship causing it to tuck its tail and return home. The Sea Shepherd ship, Bob Barker, has been hunting the Nisshin Maru, since the 9th of February and has kept them from harvesting whales which also makes it unprofitable for the Japanese whalers to be at sea.
Recent research has found that dolphins that are blindfolded have the ability to imitate fin movement, swimming maneuvers and other actions of nearby dolphins even when their vision is impaired.
One dolphin named Tanner who resides in the Florida Keys at the Dolphin Research Center wore nontransparent goggles administered by Dr. Kelly Jaakkola. Tanner then demonstrated the ability to ascertain [...]
According to a recent post in Rick O’Barry’s blog, six brave Japanese women held a demonstration in Taiji against the dolphin hunt taking place that day. O’Barry said that if people in Japan speak out they risk losing their jobs and become socially ostracized not to mention repercussions with the government.
