Ben Swann Reality Check asks President Obama about U.S. foreign policy that is fighting al-Qaeda in Afghanistan while supporting al Qaeda in Syria.

Our history with al-Qaeda is very complicated. The U.S. Government created al-Qaeda during the 1970’s to sow the seeds of discord in the Afghanistan and Pakistan. The goal was to create problems for the Soviet Union. Hillary Clinton confirmed that these facts in an interview.

Since September 11, 2001 the U.S. has spent over one trillion dollars battling al-Qaeda in Afghanistan and Pakistan. So, if al-Qaeda is our enemy, why is U.S supporting al-Qaeda fighters as part of the Syrian opposition, just as we did in the Libyan uprising.

Ben asked President Obama about this when he met with him one on one. Obama responded by saying that the U.S. is only providing non-lethal support to Syria.

According to the New York Times, the CIA is involved with providing weapons purchased by Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar.
