Aspartame: Not So Sweet Anymore_Featured_, Nutrition Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010
As more health conscious individuals try to avoid sugar and switch to low calorie sweeteners like NutraSweet and Equal made from aspartame, more health experts are saying it’s really a dangerous toxin. Dr. Russel Blaylock believes that even though sugar based sodas contribute to obesity, heart disease, and diabetes, switching to diet colas is not the answer. “The major artificial sweeteners are associated with deadly, crippling diseases, including brain tumors, seizures, migraine headaches, and miscarriages,” says Blaylock.
Blaylock also says that aspartame is a cumulative poison which accumulates in the body and the body turns it into toxic chemicals which damage brain neurons and is lethal to DNA. The sweetener has also been connected to pancreatic cancer, leukemia, lymphoma, and breast cancer. Aspartame is 50% Phenylalanine which if someone has the PKU gene can cause brain damage and death and is also harmful to diabetics.
Those that use aspartame for weight control may be disappointed to find out it may actually have the opposite effect. Aspartame may in fact cause obesity in some people according to Blaylock.
Another study associated with depression found that aspartame ingestion had to be stopped due to attempted and committed suicides.
Other concerns are that aspartame is detrimental to diabetics by subverting insulin function and blood sugar levels. The addictive nature of aspartame due to glutamate neurotransmission is more difficult to overcome than nicotine according to Blaylock.
Dr. Blaylock said as an alternative Stevia may be safer though it sometimes causes hypoglycemia or a small dose of Sweet’N Low but better to drink purified water or white tea which you can train yourself to drink and avoid sweetened drinks.
