Another Win for the Dolphin!
_Featured_, Nature Tuesday, September 21st, 2010
Rick O’Barry and his team of dolphin freedom fighters ended 450 years of dolphin hunting with key tribes in the Solomon Islands. The dramatic negotiation was seen on the last episode of Blood Dolphins. Only Japan outnumbers the Solomon Islands in the number of dolphins killed per year. Many people in this region live in poverty and use dolphin teeth as currency and rely on dolphin meat for food which has become part of their tradition. The tribes have signed a two year agreement and in that time the Earth Island institute will help them find alternatives to hunting dolphins. If these tribes can set an example, then other tribes among the Solomon Islands can easily follow their model. You can watch the team go undercover and try to help dolphins around the world on Animal Planet. If you would like to find out more and would like to help find out here.
