Advanced Humanoid Roboy to be ‘Born’ in Nine Months

roboy(KurzweilAI.net) Meet Roboy, “one of the most advanced humanoid robots,” say researchers at the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory of the University of Zurich.

Their 15 project partners and over 40 engineers and scientists are constructing Roboy as a tendon-driven robot modeled on human beings (robots usually have their motors in their joints, giving them that “robot” break-dance look), so it will move almost as elegantly as a human.

Roboy will be a “service robot,” meaning it will execute services independently for the convenience of human beings, as in the movie Robot & Frank.

And since service robots share their “living space” with people, user-friendliness and safety, above all, are of great importance, roboticists point out.

Which is why “soft robotics” — soft to the touch, soft in their interaction, soft and natural in their movements — will be important, and Roboy will be covered with “soft skin,” making interacting with him safer and more pleasant.

Service robots are already used in a wide variety of areas today, including for household chores, surveillance work and cleaning, and in hospitals and care homes. Our aging population is making it necessary to keep older people as autonomous as possible for as long as possible, which means caring for aged people is likely to be an important area for the deployment of service robots, roboticists say.

To speed up the process, the AI Lab researchers set a goal to build Roboy in just 9 months (the project began five months ago). Roboy will be unveiled at the Robots on Tour March 8 and 9, 2013 in Zurich.

To make this ambitious schedule possible, they decided to finance the first grassroots robotics project via crowdfunding. To participate, see Make Roboy your friend.

You can also friend Roboy on Facebook.

By announcing the birth of a humanoid baby robot, we are not implying any relationship to a current holiday and certain Futurama episodes — get that idea out of your head! BTW, Roboy just accepted my friend request. That’s not something you see every day. —- Ed.

  1. Can I get one of those that is built like Pamela Anderson?

  2. Unfortunately this is NOT a true STRONG A.I. system as it’s
processing is based upon Expert System logic and it has
a bunch of cheap ARM processors as its processing core,
thus it will be no smarter than a bug…not even an ant…more
    like a fly larvae!

    To Ray…if you’re reading this…you need Multi-State boolean logic
(aka Neural Net) running on 3D stacked Silicon-on-Diamond or more
preferably, Gallium Arsenide on Diamond Substrates…The key
is combining Digital Signal Processing with Audio/Vision Recognition
IN HARDWARE running at 500 GHZ! ONLY 3D stacked GaAs-on-C
can do that sort of speed in a reasonable cubic volume of space which
can fit within a human head-like structure.

    When you’re running a 16 by 16 core by 32 layers (8192 64-bit CPU cores)
at 500 GHZ each having 4 hardware threads that do 16 instructions per clock cycle, you’re getting about 128 PETAFLOPS which is MORE THAN ENOUGH horsepower
to get WAY OVER THE equivalent of a PHD-level human brain when using a
technique called Whole Brain Emulation. Since the human brain is about 100 petaflops (100 quadrillion floating point operations per second), I see no reason
such a system can’t be brought to PHD/post-grad level within 2 years of going
online if it’s TAUGHT pattern matching abilities via multiple input streams
    24/7/365. In fact, I believe such a system would be a SUPER-STRONG
Artificial Intelligence WAY EXCEEDING human abilities!

In my part of the world (Vancouver, Canada) we’ve got post-docs making
300 GHZ 32 chips using GaAs-on-Diamond…so there is no reason that
those circuits can’t be 3D stacked and pushed to TeraHertz levels
in a space the size of a soccer ball.

    • Well I dunno wher the flops capabilities here above come from, but there’s no cincremental process (understand no basic repeated operations) in the brain.
anything asked to the brain is answered in a time that depends only in the time needed for the brain to chemically/electrically come to a new equilibrium.
Any attemp to “model” it with “iterative cells” like processors would at its best sample an analog reality.

You need a brain? grow it, interface it, teach it :) … Note that solid state can still be the answer, if ever someone achieves at least 2 things:
build some discrete integrated reconfigurable amp arrays acting like neuron layers.
plunging the “brain” into a liquid or electromagnetioc or whatever environment of which composition affects the cells’ behavior (model of the hormonal/chemical part of the brain’s functionning) …

Never forget somthing though: where’s the thin line between “smart enough to it” and “smart enough to ask for a counterpart”? :P
And what about “smart enough not to do it”? aha haz ha…

In the end also, it’s obvious tha with roboy, accent is put more on the body, which reaaaally works out a good idea in motorization, than on the AI using it.

  3. Put a wireless transceiver in its head and hook it up to google. Should be able to do everything then.

  4. Clem Kadiddlehopper

    Geez Henry,
Never mind the geekspeak, Just solve all the worlds problems THEN worry about the robot’s brain capacity.

  5. The idea that mechanical processor speed and “operations per second” will result in a human like mind is folly. The source of the mind is not the materialistic capabilities of the brain …. just like the source of what we see on a tv is not the tv itself. The brain is only a receiver and transmitter for the metaphysical non material mind to express itself in this earthly plane. When the brain “dies” … consciousness remains. This is life after “death” .. which is not death at all .. merely a change of worlds. If consciousness were merely information .. a stack of books should theoretically become “self aware”.

    • Well put, Eric. A stack of books contains fragments of awareness, but is not aware,

    • Indeed, Eric! The brain is a marvelous biological machine controlled by the spirit of the person inhabiting that body. Henry Eckstein in an earlier comment goes into great detail about all the technology needed to emulate the brain, technology designed by intelligent human beings. Yet evolutionists want us to believe that the human brain, and all the other amazing biological machines on this planet just happened to come about by blind unintelligent undirected random forces! This is not so. As the bible teaches us we are fearfully and wonderfully made by God, and God’s qualities, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. God left evidence of his creative work all over his creation, we just need to look with an open mind to see it and accept it.
