Dear [Name of Company/Brand],

The California Secretary of State has made public the financial contributions for supporters and opponents of Proposition 37, the initiative on the November 6 ballot in California that would mandate labeling of genetically engineered ingredients in foods.

If you are one of the organic companies that stepped up to the plate and contributed to support this initiative, I would like to sincerely thank you. It is important to me to support companies that share my values. I was therefore happy to see that my food dollars, when I buy your products, are invested back in measures that I support. I applaud your efforts to support consumers’ right to know, and will gladly support your company by buying your products—and encouraging my friends and family to do so as well.

I was disappointed to see that the corporate owners of brands like Horizon, Silk, R.W. Knudsen, Santa Cruz Organic, Kashi, and other organic and “natural” brands oppose Proposition 37. I will look for alternatives to these brand names, since I have no interest in supporting companies that embrace GMOs and invest their profits, some based on my patronage, in opposing the public’s right to know what is in our food.

Finally, I was disappointed to see that companies (like Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Stonyfield and others) that profess to embrace organics and state they are against GMOs, have yet to contribute financially to supporting Proposition 37 in California. With companies like Monsanto, Kellogg and Pepsico spending millions of dollars in their attempt to defeat Proposition 37, it is crucial that all companies that truly believe in organics and transparency support the labeling initiative.

If your company supports labeling of GMOs, but has not yet contributed financially to the effort in California to require mandatory labeling, I implore you to do so. Passing Proposition 37 in California may be our best, if not last, chance at seeing all foods containing GMO ingredients labeled nationally.
