2012: Arkansas Blackbirds Die Again En Masse

Blackbirds should stay indoors on New Years Eve from now on.

For the second New Year’s Eve in a row blackbirds have fallen dead from the sky in central Arkansas.  A radar image appeared on KATV showing a huge formation over Beebe just hours before midnight.  The TV station said that hundreds of birds perished.  The animal control representative, Hearst Taylor said they still don’t know the reason for the bird deaths.

A year ago fireworks were blamed for thousands of blackbird deaths.  Last year biologists thought the birds had been scared of their roosts and consequently flew into cars, homes, and telephones as well as collided into other birds.
